Obviously, when corporal punishment was a normal everyday experience in British schools, there was often a reluctance to punish girls as freely as they did the boys. Quite a few schools would also have a policy where no pupils would be given a formal punishment in the presence of other pupils.
But not all.
Sadly, I went to an all-boys school, but there were definitely times when two or three pupils would be in the office of the headmaster or his deputy, being caned for some joint misdemeanour. It seems quite possible, therefore, that there may have been a few occasions when boys and girls were given a formal punishment in the presence of pupils of the opposite sex. Personally, if the opportunity had presented itself, I would have done something that I knew would result in being caned, if I could implicate a girl into the behaviour so that I got to witness her being caned as well. Maybe not as exciting as in this image from Pandora Blake's wonderful Dreams of Spanking website, but well worth it.

Ha-ha! Funny, James....agreed, but maybe it was as exciting in British schools further back in the 1940s !? :-)
And of course, for daughters in those strict, normal, fabled British homes in the Ol' fashioned, traditional 1950s-1980s golden age of CP, as documented by Janus magazine in the late 1970s. Oh my!
School spankings in the US were also " not as exciting as in this image", James. Indeed, school spankings in the US were less important, influential or theatrical compared to the UK. That is because the spanking of naughty daughters in America was primarily the responsibility , pray strict duty, preserve & necessary chore of mom n pop. School outsourced schoolgirls' bare red bottoms to strict, parental protocols. Oh my! For sure.
Growing up in 1960s Georgia, I always joked that at least 99% of Southern girls gotten soundly punished on their bare bottoms at home .....OK, funny: a slight exaggeration if you will, James. Alas, the true figure was 90% !!!
My sister & I cannot recall many of our princess brat cohort (over many years) who did not get their bare backsides thrashed at home in the 1960s, 70s & 80s. Southern (dis)Comfort indeed. It was cultural thang !
And it was the cane at home for sister & me, & indeed for a few other girls (whose moms had taken the "cane to bare botty" guidance advice for their daughters' discipline from our own vocal, influential mom at church !!!), ....although it was the trad, leather Southern strap that was the typical implement for heat to the seat in most homes.
A fair number of Janus & Roue articles & Readers' Letters in the 1970s & early 80s refer to historical records & anecdotes of bare bottom punishment in schools, institutions and naturally, those iconic Private Schools in 1940s Britain, James. I defer to your greater wisdom on this, James. Oh my! Indeed, I only gotten to learn about British CP myself from my copies of Janus magazine in the late 1970s (as a student in Georgia SA).
I was excited & very keen (still am !) to learn about the facts of how the rattan cane, tawse & plimsoll would whistle & SMACK! hard across the bare, sensitive-skinned botties of naughty daughters at home in the 1950s to early 1980s era, James. Indeed, I stridently approved....Bring Back the Cane as they say !!! No need for the naughty step :-)
Oh my! And for me, back then in the late 70s/80s, I felt so culturally aligned & empathetic to young, British girls receiving bare bottom canings from strict parents at home after misbehaving. Bums across the ocean !
And so the classic British School CP genre is perhaps more theatrical than any other category of CP (almost) anywhere ?!. This is, and to your great, constant humour above, because it is largely based on fantasy (certainly regarding bare bottoms). Whereas CP at home was based on fact - our schoolgirl bottoms gotten bared - & personal experience.
And so in the real world schools of the great Oaks & Pines (from our very own dearest B) and Strictmoor Academy :-)
.... canings are administered over naughty lassie's clothed bottoms. But at home, canings are administered over unclothed bottoms !
Ay home, there is no need for mom to cane over y'all panties ! Down they must come ! And down they always come ! As my sister & I painfully discovered (& now ruefully, if fondly recall ha-ha ) at a young age in the 1960s.
