Rachel begged the headmistress not to phone her mother to seek permission to administer a severe caning - she knew fine well that her mother would agree. But worse than that she would want to know why so then she'd know about her daughter's shameful behaviour as well. It had just been a panic reaction. She was accused and lied to deflect blame two others. As a result, two innocent girls had been caned, but now the truth was out. Worst of all she was forced to listen to the headmistress detailing how the two girls had each received four strokes of the cane on their hands for something that was entirely Rachels' doing. The headmistress explained at length that she had no option but to give Rachel eight strokes of the senior cane across her bottom. Rachel had never heard of anyone getting such a severe punishment and having never been caned before, she was terrified.

That is not "ferociously kind" in the maternal tradition, James. It is just ferocious. And cruel. And unnecessary ! Ergo: my strict, loving mother told me early on, that God had provided me (& my younger sister, it seemed) with a special, well-padded, place for "the rod of correction" at home. Eureka - it was the bare, sensitive skin on my "seat of learning" (Boo-Hoo-botties) that was the target, not on my hands. And yes, mom used a flexible, rattan cane. Was my mom right ? Well, this was the 1960s James....so it is too early to tell :-)
So, eight on the bottom for this naughty young lady is perfect & sensible, James. Her mother will be invited for various reasons, not least, because..."yes, yes, yes, young lady!" Rachel's skirt can be lifted, & her cotton panties duly pulled down for a proper smacked bottom with the cane. No half-measures. Observed and witnessed with decorum. No wishy-washy nonsense! It is all just noted protocol & procedure (well, from now on, at least).
And, to booty, regarding the baring, as y'all redoubtable, lovely, "ferociously kind", good lady, Church moms traditionally say,
" Why, I sure ain't gotten no argument with the seat of your knickers, young lady !"
Moreover, the Headmistress will then gladly gift the cane to Rachel's mother for appropriate, long lasting use at home, with mom having just seen how it is done ! Rachel's behaviour at school (& home) will henceforth be impeccable, it is predicted. A "win win" in common parlance.
The two other girls were unfortunate & innocent. Collateral damage, it seems. Book vouchers will need to be awarded in ex gratia. But, alas, princess brats are not innocent forever, James, & so both their mothers will also now receive a "gift ": a same complementary, whippy-thin cane (by courier)...."just in case" !
A functional, pray essential implement (no ornament, already!) And one for use upon their daughters' bare buttocks only, pray, not on their hands. That goes without saying, James (but yet is still firmly said, and in writing too). This is simply just normal & necessary, salutary discipline going forward.
Note: School Handbooks and HR guidance will need to be altered immediately.
