Were they ever a real thing or just the stuff of fantasy? There are enough references out there to believe that, although it was unusual, very occasionally a teacher did smack an errant pupil with the flat of his/her hand across their bottom (and I witnessed that on more than one occasion). And it is also beyond dispute that in the case of really bad behaviour, a pupil might be sent to the headmaster's office (or that of another senior member of staff), and punished with a strap or cane. In the later years before the abolition of corporal punishment in UK schools there was a move towards such punishments, especially for girls, being given on their hands rather than their bottoms but that hadn't always been the way. It is also a fact that some pupils getting the cane or strap would brag to their peers about it afterwards and feign indifference. I rather doubt that anyone would brag to their peers if the headmaster had put them over his lap and spanked them. They might have left his office with a very sore bottom, maybe crying, but desperate for their friends not to know they've been given a punishment more associated with small children.

Hands smacking might cause injury, not to mention that the bottom* is more adequate, it isn't called the seat of leaning for nothing ! Hands smacking might hinder redoing the failed quiz, while sitting on a fiery bum would for sure encourage one to make an extra effort...

Well James, discovering Janus in the 1970s, as a University student in the US, I was pleased (well, mesmerized actually !!!) to discover that the sound of the nasty cane or British plimsoll across the bare, squishy-soft bottoms of naughty daughters at home ( a rather loud, resounding, reassuring SMACK ! of a noise in fact!!) was simply a function of good parenting, and indeed a strong, popular social more. I approved ! ....I still do approve, at age 66, James !!
And for lil' Ol' me, in my late teens back then, the description of bare bottom canings/strappings/slipperings written by moms, fathers n daughters alike in the Janus & Roue Readers' Letters was just a normal, necessary fact of life.
Yes, I had been raised the exact same way in my happy, religious, loving Southern childhood (ie firm bare bottom discipline with the cane from my mother when I was naughty in the 1960s & 70s. Ditto for my younger sister). So I always say, CP good. PC bad ! Even though it was not called PC in the 1970s ha-ha !! Oh my!
Caning hands is abusive and dangerous, Janus. I do not approve, already. But caning bare bottoms is perfectly safe...and indeed salutary & stingy (as my own two strictly-raised 1980s/90s, now grown up daughters will ruefully tell you, James !) Yes, moderate flicks & common sense are needed. Indeed Janus itself always said in the 1970s " a sensible panties down caning" is needed for girls at home. They key word id SENSIBLE. My mother said CP was simply strict kindness in front of God.
My mom always said "the seat of learning", pray, the very "BARE seat of learning", to be precise (as B says above) is the only place suitable for chastisement. As a Southern belle, and mother of my two girls, "spare the rod spoil the child" meant panties pulled down without exception, for bare, red botties with the cane (but never, ever red raw hands !) As we moms said at church, hands are for loving. Bottoms are for spanking ! Oh my!
Yes, of course, smacked bottoms at school were over clothed seats of learning, not bare. In Georgia, we gotten the paddle. Albeit my sister & I never gotten spanked at school. CP was less of a trope in the US, than in the UK. Less of a genre. Less of a theme. This is because daughters gotten their bare botties smacked at home by mom or pop instead, almost without exception ! And this is still the case for most daughters today (albeit percentages are much lower now, than during the 1950s-90s normal, golden era of smacked bottoms) The percentage is higher in Georgia, South Carolina & the South than in other states. Oh my! And moreover, the smacked bottom figure is higher for African American girls (as a good church lady/organizer/coordinator, & indeed an observer, sure am expert on this !!)
For my own young granddaughters in Georgia, the "bottysmacker" is still the cane. And when mom has passed "sentence" & fetches the cane for bad behaviour, then yes, their panties always have to come down to their knees, so that it stings on the bare orthodox surface. Protests & crying by the armchair/sofa in the living room are completely ignored....no wishy-washy nonsense for a stinging bottom ! Good behaviour & obedience then abound for sure !!! Same as y'all girls traditionally gotten, James !
Yes, back at home, this girl needs to have her skirt lifted, her knickers pulled down for the cane on her bare buttocks from mom or pop ! A letter home from School should suffice (parental signature for the reply, already), and then pray, just maybe....there is no need for CP at school ! My mother, perhaps surprisingly did not like CP at school....she felt it should be given at home. Oh my! It sure was, Boo-Hoo !!!!
