Guide to this blog

The Blogroll is now in three parts. The main part is arranged according to the date the blog was last updated with the most recent first. Many blogs use the BDSMLR platform which does not include date information; they are in a separate Blogroll arranged alphabetically but I check from time to time and remove any that have been permanently closed. The final part is a list of interesting Twitter feeds - again in alphabetical order.

Digital Economy Act 2017

The UK government is on the warpath once more with the intention of restricting access to on-line pornography by under 18s.  And, once again, they will fail.  They don't understand technology and in any case they can only restrict material published from the UK or hosted in the UK.  And they clearly haven't heard of VPNs.  For a good academic comment on the new legislation it's well worth reading this article from The Conversation.

Well I hadn't heard of VPNs either but I have now. Thanks.

I have used Surfeasy as a VPN for a few years. Mainly for better security when using hotel network connections but also handy when content is restricted to certain countries - quite a few US TV stations restrict content to USA and also when you're abroad the BBC don't allow access to a lot of their content but the VPN allows you to just switch which country you appear to be from in a matter of seconds.
