It's hard to remember
how hard it was to explore a fascination with the spanking fetish in the days
before the Internet. There's no doubt I was fascinated for years at a
time when I had to search really hard to find anything to stimulate my interest
- perhaps part of the reason why I took to writing my own spanking fiction.
I was aware that their were magazines like Janus, Martinet, Spank
and Sting (from reading The English Vice by Ian Gibson from cover to
cover in my local reference library) but assumed that it was only in places
like Soho that they would be found and I wasn't likely during my teenage years
to have unfettered access to such places.
When I started
applying to universities and getting invited for interviews two things happened
very quickly. Firstly I noticed that many businessmen travelling on
trains seemed to have porno mags in their briefcases. Then, one day in
the autumn of 1977 or early 1978, I travelled for an interview at one of the
universities in Manchester. As I walked out of the station I passed a
newsstand and my eyes were drawn to the top of a copy of Janus at the back of
the stand. For the rest of my visit I kept thinking about it and remember
very little else about the university visit. On the assumption that I
knew nobody in Manchester and would probably not be going back there any time
soon I revisited the newsstand on my return to the station and bought the
magazine.
I have the magazine
still although I haven't revised my view of the images. In fact, looking
through it recently, there was really only one poor quality black and white
image that I rather like.

Now then young man I can see you weren't brought up proper. Back in the 1960s I used to visit Soho regularly (for perfectly legitimate reasons) and there all the sex shops had lots of "flage mags" as they were called. If you asked for something stronger you could be taken into the back where brown paper jackets concealed what today would be regarded as extremely tame stories and pictures of spanking. They were, by the standards of the day, very expensive. Some of the strip clubs around there also had spanking strip scenes as part of their shows. Outside of Soho and London such material was much harder to find though I remember about 1969 going into a newsagent in a village and finding a half a dozen spanking magazines on the top shelf. The shop was owned and run by a little old lady....I never had the courage to ask.....

In my nostalgic younger days when I visited London, England. My first stop was the Janus Book Shop. The sexual and erotic feeling that came over me, when I stepped inside that wonderful spanking palace, was most heavenly.
Well I can go one better in the very eary 70's I was staying with my Aunt as I went to college in Londen. She was unmarried and a great bit of fun who had often threatened me in passing to be good or she'd tan my hide.
Well and behold but in one off her back rooms I came accross Janus while looking for something and not just one but a few,I was gazing at them when she was behind me.
I went red as a betroot and made some silly remarke she took offence and put me over her knee pulled up my mini skirt and gave my first ever spanking.
I was 20 and it wasn't my last and I even got the chance to do the same to her once or twice. She's long dead now god rest her
Actually, I rather like that cover picture. The swell of her behind is perfectly captured, and the shadow of the had descending towards it is very evocative.

That should read 'the shadow of the hand'.

I love to hear your memoirs & narratives, James. It is nostalgic for me already (at age 60) & I see the similarities, albeit I was in Atlanta USA as a student in the 1970s. I sure remember that front cover :-)
Interesting for myself to remember that CP at home in the UK & Georgia were very strict & similar in the 1960s, 70s & 80s...but UK gotten all PC after that. And now the bare bottom spanking culture is still largely embedded in the Southern States (particularly) but not so much in Europe & UK. When I raised my own two daughters in the "strict Southern fashion" in the 1980s/90s (with CP on their bare bottoms) there were very few PC moms...Thank The Lord !
Regarding nostalgic Janus already, I sure remember even better the covers of 1979 - The School Lesson & the Riding Lesson which showed authentic bare bottom CP on the front cover, in colour. I found that mesmerising & compelling as a single girl at College. My memories of strict childhood canings came back at me like a boomerang !
Love that black & white photo - she is doing the frantic botty rub & the Southern switchy-dance, James. That it is me already in the 1960s. Yes, family photos back then & the whole World was in black n white. But my lil' sister & me gotten our bottoms whipped red !
Oh my ! That dreaded Southern Switchy Dance gotten to be my speciality from age 8 in the living room after I gotten my knickers pulled down & my bare botty spanked with the whippy-thin, rattan cane. I screamed with pain. Oh my ! It felt like mommy was removing the fairy-soft skin off my poor bum, layer by layer :-(
Alas, it was nothing of the sort: just a necessary, harmless, perfectly-kind, mother's chastisement that I so deserved. Completely harmless & salutary. Naturally, I made a big fuss as my white botty stung like Hell on Earth ! Sister & me gotten to call it "the hornets nest". That was a lil' princess-bratlet's prerogative, James.
We sure gotten whooped with that nasty cane a bunch throughout our childhoods: our cotton, white 1950s knickers around our knees & our chubby, alabaster-white buttocks all bare & tender for a whooping "in front of God". Oh my ! And I raised my own girls with the exact same punishment. It sure worked !
Janus & your UK mags (kindly featured now on your Blog) were so compelling in days of yore. Our own American Nu West followed suite quite soon with the fabulous 1950s-style "Debbie & her mother", spanking series in the early 80s. But Janus & Roue were so pioneering in their heyday.
Thanks & regards.
